Wrestlemania: The Grandaddy of Them All
“The Showcase of the Immortals” is often associated with the worldwide global wrestling event known to the millions of wrestling and entertainment fans as Wrestlemania. Since its creation by Vince McMahon 25 years ago, it has been able to draw millions and millions of wrestling fans, while creating some new ones annually.
Due to its ability to draw, thousands of wrestlers and fans have tried to take a role in the event, making it their dreams to one day participate in one edition. Experts in the industry even used the event to judge the success of many wrestlers. Failure to partake in the event is often associated with an unsuccessful career. Many WWE stars such as Hulk Hogan, The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, The Rock, Steven Austin, Bret Hart, Triple H and more have used the event to elevate their careers and established themselves as bona fide wrestling superstars.
Wrestlemania usually takes place in late March or early April annually. Most of the television shows such as Raw and Smackdown are designed to eventually reach their climax at the event, which features most of the organization’s championship titles, especially the World Heavyweight Title and WWE’s own World Title. Besides these, the event is also well known for putting up specialty and gimmick matches such as the recently addition of Money in the Bank, where the only way to be declared the winner is to climb a ladder in an attempt to reach a briefcase suspended high above the ring while fending off five to seven competitors. This fast pace and exciting match, filled with high flying maneuvers, amazing aerobics and stunts, have been a fan favorite since its inauguration five years ago.
Most wrestling events around the world are usually held in big halls, conventions, or sports arenas. However, the Superbowl of wrestling has the privilege and ability to draw attendance numbers to that of the NFL and MLB. 9 of the last 25 editions have been held in large stadiums, with the lowest at 54, 097 at Wrestlemania XIX in Seattle to the 93, 173 in Pontiac, Michigan for its 3rd anniversary. That edition not only holds the current world indoor attendance record for any event, but it also was the largest paying attendance in wrestling history at that time. Wrestlemania 3 was the prime example of the golden wrestling boom in the 1980s.
Wrestlemania, throughout the years, have provided fans with the greatest moments, highlights, and memories in wrestling history. Most fans still recall Hogan slamming the 500 pound Andre the Giant, the universally acclaim confrontation between Randy Savage and Ricky Steamboat, the explosion of the Mega Powers, the Ultimate Showdown, the ladder match between Razor Ramon and Shawn Michaels, the one hour Iron Man, Stone Cold showing his toughness by refusing to submit, the Tables, Ladders, and Chair matches, Icon vs Icon between Hogan and the Rock, the emotional retirement of Nature Boy Ric Flair, and the undefeated streak of the Undertaker, which now stands at an amazing 17-0.
Wrestlemania not only holds the attention of wrestlers and fans, but the success and popularity have also draw the attention of many celebrities throughout the 25 years. The first edition showcased boxing legend Muhammad Ali and Mr. T. The second edition featured a 20 man battle royal pitting WWE superstars against NFL players. Mike Tyson was the special guest enforcer at XIV, while professional welterweight boxer Flyod “Money”Mayweather battled The Big Show at XXIV. Even business tycoon Donald Trump was featured in a Hair vs. Hair match against owner Vince McMahon at the 23rd edition. The latest saw Oscar-nominated best actor Mickey Rourke as a spectator for a match that ended with him delivering a knock out blow to wrestler Chris Jericho.
Many world famous and renowned musicians have also participated at Wrestlemania. Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Willie Nelson, Reba McEntire, Little Richard, Boyz II Men, Ashanti, John Legend, Motorhead, Limp Bizkit, and Kid Rock were just a few who performed at the events.
After a quarter of a century, Wrestlemania is still not showing its aging legs since cities around the world continue to wrestle for their right to hold the event in their respective cities. The impact of the event is certain because those cities know Wrestlemania have brought in millions of dollars of revenues to the host cities through the years. Would we continue to witness astounding matches and moments from the event in the future? The answer is simple: Definitely.
